INQUIRE: ENCODING Specifier

The ENCODING specifier asks what type of encoding is in effect for a file. It takes the following form:

ENCODING = enc

enc

Is a scalar default character expression that is assigned one of the following values:

'UTF-8'

If the file is connected with UTF-8 encoding in effect.

'UNDEFINED'

If the file is connected for unformatted I/O.

'UNKNOWN'

If the processor is unable to determine the encoding form of the file.
